Your documents are yours.

The short version

• We read the documents you give us to explain them back to you. That is all.
• We do not sell your data, run ads, or share it with data brokers — ever.
• We never use your documents to train our own AI.
• Exploring the sample estate needs no account and stores nothing about you. A real account keeps your circle so your family can come back to it.
• You can delete your circle and everything in it at any time.

What we collect

The documents you add. When you paste or upload a document, we work with the text it contains in order to produce your plain-language reading, surface any deadlines, and point you to the right office.

Your email address — only if you create an account. We use it to send you a one-time sign-in link and to identify your circle. We never put anything sensitive in a link or a URL.

Basic technical signals. Like any website, our servers briefly see your IP address and request headers. We use these transiently to keep the service available and to rate-limit abuse — not to build a profile of you.

We do not ask for, and you should not enter, more than the documents you want explained. Please redact what you do not need us to see.

How your documents are processed

To turn a dense document into a clear explanation, we send its text to our AI provider (Anthropic) for that single purpose, and the result is returned to you. We do not use your documents to train any model of our own. Our provider’s standard commercial terms state that content sent through its API is not used to train its models; we are putting a formal data-processing agreement in place to hold that commitment in writing, and will update this section once it is signed.

Some processing happens entirely on our own servers and never leaves them — for example, reading text out of an uploaded file. The engine is built to quote only what is literally on your document; it is designed so it cannot invent a number, a date, or a citation that is not there.

What is kept, and for how long

The sample estate (no account). When you explore the demo without signing in, your copy lives only in server memory, is isolated to your visit, and is discarded automatically — nothing is written to a database.

Your circle (with an account). If you create an account, the documents, the readings, the checklist, and your circle’s members are stored so you and the family members you invite can return to them. They are kept until you delete them or close your circle.

Sign-in links. We store only a one-way hash of each sign-in link so it can be used exactly once. We never store the link itself.

Deleting your data

Your circle is yours to close. You can delete individual documents, and you can request deletion of your entire circle and account at any time by writing to hello@afterward.example. We will remove your stored data and confirm when it is done. Demo data requires no request — it is never persisted in the first place.

Who can see your circle

Only the people you invite. Roles control who can manage the workspace and who can open sensitive documents — a helper making phone calls does not need the same access as the executor. Inviting family is always free; togetherness is never paywalled.

How we protect it

Traffic is encrypted in transit. We send a strict set of security headers and a content-security policy, accept uploads only after verifying them, sign in with single-use links rather than passwords, and keep document parsing in-process. No system is perfect, but we hold the bar high because of what you are trusting us with.

Children

Afterward is meant for adults handling an estate. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes, and how to reach us
